Introduction
Operation Magic Carpet, also known as Operation On Wings of Eagles, is often remembered as one of the great rescue stories of the twentieth century. Between 1949 and 1950, almost 50,000 Jews from Yemen and the British-controlled Aden Protectorate were flown to the newly established State of Israel in an unprecedented airlift. For many participants, the journey fulfilled generations of religious hope and offered escape from growing insecurity. Yet historians have increasingly challenged the simple narrative of an uncomplicated miracle. Research has shown that the migration was also marked by overcrowded transit camps, disease, poor planning and hundreds of preventable deaths. Rather than replacing one myth with another, modern scholarship argues that both realities existed at once: an extraordinary rescue that also involved serious human suffering and administrative failure.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilBen-Gurion University Research PortalThe "magic carpet" exodus of Yemenite Jewry: an Israeli formative myth - Ben-Gurion University Resea…
The Mass Departure from Yemen and Aden
By the late 1940s, Yemen’s ancient Jewish community faced a rapidly changing political landscape. The establishment of Israel in 1948, anti-Jewish violence in Aden following the United Nations partition vote, and uncertainty about the future encouraged many families to leave. After negotiations involving the Imam of Yemen, the British authorities in Aden, the Israeli government and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), an organised airlift began. Over roughly a year, hundreds of flights carried almost the entire remaining Jewish population of Yemen, along with smaller groups from neighbouring areas, to Israel.[JDC Archives]archives.jdc.orgJDC ArchivesHistory of JDC: 1950s | JDC Archives…
The flights themselves were a remarkable logistical achievement. Many migrants first had to walk for days or weeks across mountainous terrain to reach Aden, often carrying little more than sacred books and essential possessions. Aircraft operated by American crews, including Alaska Airlines personnel under charter, transported thousands of passengers in rapid succession. The operation became one of the defining migration stories of the early Israeli state.[jdc.org]archives.jdc.orgJDC ArchivesFinding Aid – Jerusalem – 1944-1952 – Aden | JDC Archives…
What later became controversial was not the fact of the rescue itself but the way its public memory developed. Official commemorations and popular accounts often emphasised courage, speed and success while giving far less attention to the hardships experienced before departure and immediately after arrival.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilBen-Gurion University Research PortalThe "magic carpet" exodus of Yemenite Jewry: an Israeli formative myth - Ben-Gurion University Resea…
Messianic Language and the Promise of Return
Operation Magic Carpet acquired unusual symbolic power because it resonated with deeply rooted religious expectations among many Yemeni Jews. The operation’s official Hebrew name, “On Wings of Eagles”, drew directly from the biblical image of God carrying Israel to safety. The English nickname “Magic Carpet” likewise evoked both Arabian imagery and the seemingly miraculous appearance of aircraft in communities where many people had never seen an aeroplane.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOperation Magic Carpet (YemenOperation Magic Carpet (Yemen
For numerous migrants, the journey was understood not simply as emigration but as redemption. Earlier generations of Yemeni Jews had preserved traditions expressing hope of returning to Zion, and some interpreted the opportunity to leave as the fulfilment of long-awaited prophecy. Religious language therefore came naturally to participants themselves, not merely to Israeli officials or journalists.[National Library of Israel]nli.org.ilNational Library of Israel Yemenite JewryNational Library of Israel Yemenite Jewry
At the same time, historians argue that state-building narratives amplified this religious symbolism. The migration was presented as proof that the new state had gathered exiles from across the Jewish world and fulfilled ancient promises. According to historian Esther Meir-Glitzenstein, this produced a powerful national myth centred on miraculous rescue and heroic achievement, making it harder for later generations to recognise the failures that accompanied the operation.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilBen-Gurion University Research PortalThe "magic carpet" exodus of Yemenite Jewry: an Israeli formative myth - Ben-Gurion University Resea…
Why Historians Question the “Rescue Myth”
The phrase “rescue myth” does not imply that Yemeni Jews did not need protection or that the airlift never happened. Instead, it questions the simplified version of events that portrays the operation as almost entirely successful and free from serious mistakes.
Research based on archival records argues that the planned migration turned into a hurried mass exodus that overwhelmed the organisations responsible for managing it. Thousands of people reached temporary camps near Aden more quickly than expected. Food, shelter, sanitation and medical services proved inadequate for the numbers arriving. Infectious disease spread rapidly through overcrowded camps, especially among children and elderly migrants.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilOpen source on bgu.ac.il.
Meir-Glitzenstein argues that many deaths were not inevitable consequences of conditions inside Yemen but resulted from poor coordination between the JDC, the Jewish Agency, British officials and Israeli authorities. Rather than a flawless humanitarian success, she describes the operation as one combining genuine rescue with serious administrative failures.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilOpen source on bgu.ac.il.
Not all historians assign responsibility in exactly the same way. The difficult geography of Yemen, widespread poverty, political uncertainty and the sheer scale of moving tens of thousands of people all contributed to the crisis. Even so, there is broad agreement that the hardships experienced in the transit camps deserve greater attention than they traditionally received in public memory.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilBen-Gurion University Research PortalThe "magic carpet" exodus of Yemenite Jewry: an Israeli formative myth - Ben-Gurion University Resea…
Transit Camps, Suffering and Later National Memory
The greatest human cost occurred before passengers boarded the aircraft. Historical estimates indicate that hundreds of migrants died while travelling to Aden or while waiting in transit camps, with disease and malnutrition taking a heavy toll. The flights themselves were comparatively safe, but the weeks or months preceding departure could be extremely dangerous.[nli.org.il]nli.org.ilNational Library of Israel Yemenite JewryNational Library of Israel Yemenite Jewry
Arrival in Israel did not immediately end hardship. Many families entered temporary reception camps and later the ma’abarot—tent and hut settlements created to absorb enormous numbers of new immigrants. Living conditions were often poor, and infant mortality remained distressingly high during the early years of statehood. These experiences complicated the image of a seamless transition from persecution to security.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOperation Magic Carpet (YemenOperation Magic Carpet (Yemen
The operation also became linked, in later decades, with wider debates about the treatment of Yemeni Jews in Israel, including the unresolved and deeply emotional controversy over missing Yemenite children. Although that issue extends beyond Operation Magic Carpet itself, it has reinforced critical reassessments of the celebratory national narrative and encouraged closer examination of how migrants were received after their arrival.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOperation Magic Carpet (YemenOperation Magic Carpet (Yemen
What the Story Reveals About Collective Belief
Within the wider history of collective belief in Yemen, Operation Magic Carpet is unusual because the central belief was not a rumour, panic or delusion. The expectation that redemption had arrived was intertwined with a real migration made possible by political negotiations and modern aviation.
The episode nevertheless illustrates how historical memory can become simplified. Public narratives often transformed a complicated humanitarian operation into a story of miraculous deliverance in which suffering disappeared behind images of biblical prophecy fulfilled. Later scholarship has challenged that selective memory without denying either the dangers many Yemeni Jews faced before leaving or the remarkable achievement of transporting tens of thousands of people to safety.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilBen-Gurion University Research PortalThe "magic carpet" exodus of Yemenite Jewry: an Israeli formative myth - Ben-Gurion University Resea…
Seen this way, Operation Magic Carpet is best understood not as either miracle or disaster alone, but as both an extraordinary rescue and a cautionary example of how national myths can overshadow the lived experiences of those they celebrate. It remains culturally important because it sits at the intersection of faith, migration, state-building and the continuing effort to reconcile heroic public memory with the full historical record.[Ben-Gurion University Research Portal]cris.bgu.ac.ilBen-Gurion University Research PortalThe "magic carpet" exodus of Yemenite Jewry: an Israeli formative myth - Ben-Gurion University Resea…
