Introduction
The reported Marian visions at Medjugorje have become one of the most influential and controversial religious phenomena in south-eastern Europe. Although the village is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the six original visionaries were Croats from Herzegovina, and the shrine rapidly became woven into Croatian religious life through pilgrimage, family networks and shared Catholic identity. Since the first reported apparitions in 1981, Medjugorje has attracted millions of visitors, inspired stories of conversion and healing, generated fierce debate within the Catholic Church, and become closely associated with questions of national identity during the final years of communist Yugoslavia and the wars of the 1990s. Understanding Medjugorje therefore means looking beyond the question of whether the visions were supernatural. It also requires examining how faith, politics, memory and identity reinforced one another in a society undergoing dramatic change.
The reported visions and the first wave of pilgrims
On 24 June 1981, six teenagers from the parish of Medjugorje reported seeing the Virgin Mary on a hillside near their village. They said the figure identified herself as the “Queen of Peace” and continued appearing to them on subsequent occasions. The reported messages emphasised prayer, fasting, repentance and peace.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaVatican NewsCardinal Fernández: With new norms it will be easier to decide on Medjugorje - Vatican NewsMay 17, 2024…
The timing was significant. Bosnia and Herzegovina was then part of communist Yugoslavia, where religious practice was permitted but closely monitored. Public claims of miracles attracted official suspicion, particularly when they drew large crowds. Local police questioned the visionaries, attempted to restrict gatherings and regarded the rapidly growing pilgrimage movement with concern. These measures, however, often strengthened believers’ conviction that something extraordinary was occurring rather than discouraging participation.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaVatican NewsCardinal Fernández: With new norms it will be easier to decide on Medjugorje - Vatican NewsMay 17, 2024…
Pilgrims arrived remarkably quickly. What began as local curiosity spread through Catholic family and parish networks across Croatia, Herzegovina and the wider Croatian diaspora. Word of mouth, religious publications and organised travel transformed an isolated rural parish into an international destination within only a few years.
Communist suspicion, Catholic networks and Croatian identity
For many Croatian Catholics, Medjugorje represented more than an alleged apparition. It became a visible expression of religious identity at a time when many believers felt that communist Yugoslavia viewed organised religion with distrust.
This did not mean that the shrine functioned simply as an anti-communist movement. Pilgrims primarily came for confession, Mass and prayer. Nevertheless, religion and national identity were already closely linked among many Croats, particularly in Herzegovina and neighbouring Croatia. Public displays of Catholic devotion could therefore carry both spiritual and cultural meaning.
During the late 1980s and especially after the collapse of Yugoslavia, these connections became even stronger. Croatian pilgrims often understood Medjugorje as part of a wider story about preserving Catholic identity during political upheaval. Religious symbols associated with the shrine appeared alongside expressions of Croatian national belonging, although individual pilgrims interpreted the relationship in different ways.
Scholars have argued that Medjugorje should therefore be understood neither as purely a religious phenomenon nor simply as political nationalism. Instead, it occupied a space where devotional practice, ethnic identity and historical experience overlapped. The reported Marian emphasis on peace acquired particular emotional force during the violent conflicts that affected both Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s.
Why the Church remained cautious
One reason Medjugorje continues to generate debate is that the Catholic Church has distinguished between the value of pilgrimage and the authenticity of the reported apparitions.
Local bishops expressed scepticism from an early stage, questioning aspects of the reported visions and concluding that the supernatural character of the events had not been established. Over the following decades, several commissions examined witness testimony, documentation and theological issues without reaching a declaration that the apparitions had been definitively authenticated.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaVatican News Medjugorje and the perspective of the ChurchVatican NewsMedjugorje and the perspective of the Church - Vatican News…
The Vatican gradually adopted a more pastoral approach. In 2019, Pope Francis authorised official diocesan and parish pilgrimages, while explicitly stating that this decision should not be interpreted as recognising the alleged apparitions as genuine. The emphasis shifted towards supporting pilgrims’ spiritual lives rather than resolving every historical or supernatural question.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaVatican News Pope authorizes pilgrimages to MedjugorjeVatican NewsPope authorizes pilgrimages to Medjugorje - Vatican NewsMay 12, 2019…
In September 2024, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a further clarification under new Vatican norms. It recognised the abundant spiritual fruits associated with Medjugorje—including prayer, confession, conversions and charitable activity—and granted approval for public devotion linked to the shrine. At the same time, it deliberately stopped short of declaring that the reported apparitions themselves were supernatural. Catholics remain free to visit Medjugorje, but belief in the apparitions is not required as a matter of Church teaching.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaVatican News Pope Francis grants approval for Medjugorje devotionVatican NewsPope Francis grants approval for Medjugorje devotion - Vatican NewsSeptember 19, 2024…
Why devotion, commerce and controversy endured
The endurance of Medjugorje cannot be explained by the visions alone. Several reinforcing factors helped sustain the phenomenon.
Religious experience. Many pilgrims report renewed faith, reconciliation within families, a return to confession or a deeper commitment to Catholic practice. These personal experiences remain central to the shrine’s appeal regardless of debates over the apparitions.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaVatican News Pope Francis grants approval for Medjugorje devotionVatican NewsPope Francis grants approval for Medjugorje devotion - Vatican NewsSeptember 19, 2024…
Pilgrimage networks. Croatian parishes, prayer groups and diaspora communities organised regular visits, ensuring that new generations encountered Medjugorje through trusted social and religious connections rather than only through media coverage.
Economic transformation. The village changed dramatically from an agricultural settlement into a major pilgrimage centre with hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and religious shops serving visitors from around the world. The resulting prosperity has also fuelled criticism from those who argue that commercial interests became intertwined with devotional life.[The Times]thetimes.co.ukThe Times Visions of Virgin Mary bring economic miracle to Bosnian townThe Vatican, while not confirming the supernatural origin of the visions, has endorsed pilgrimages to the sanctuary, highlighting their p…
Continuing disagreement. Supporters point to conversions, reported healings and decades of sustained pilgrimage as evidence of genuine spiritual significance. Critics question aspects of the visionaries’ accounts, inconsistencies in reported messages and the commercialisation surrounding the shrine. The Vatican’s current position reflects this complexity by recognising positive pastoral outcomes without declaring the apparitions authentic.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaVatican News Medjugorje and the perspective of the ChurchVatican NewsMedjugorje and the perspective of the Church - Vatican News…
Why Medjugorje matters in Croatia’s history of collective belief
Within Croatia’s wider history of collective belief, Medjugorje differs fundamentally from episodes such as witch trials or later moral panics. It was not driven by fear of hidden enemies or demands for persecution. Instead, it centred on claims of miraculous intervention that inspired hope, pilgrimage and religious renewal, while also provoking prolonged institutional scrutiny.
Its importance for Croatia lies in the way it connected private spiritual experience with broader questions of identity. For many Croatian Catholics, Medjugorje became a place where religious faith, family memory and national belonging intersected during one of the most turbulent periods in modern Balkan history. Even though the village itself lies across the border in Bosnia and Herzegovina, its influence on Croatian Catholic culture has been profound.
The continuing debate also illustrates an important distinction in the study of collective belief. Large numbers of sincere believers, millions of pilgrims and lasting cultural influence do not by themselves establish whether extraordinary claims are historically or scientifically true. Medjugorje remains significant because it demonstrates how reported miracles can reshape communities, identities and institutions regardless of whether the supernatural claims themselves are ever conclusively resolved.
