Introduction
Since June 1981, the village of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina has become one of the world’s best-known Catholic pilgrimage destinations after six local children and teenagers reported seeing the Virgin Mary. Millions of pilgrims have visited since then, many describing profound religious experiences, conversions and renewed commitment to prayer. Yet one of the most unusual features of Medjugorje is that the Catholic Church has never officially declared the reported apparitions to be supernatural. Instead, it has gradually developed a careful distinction between recognising genuine spiritual benefits and authenticating the visions themselves. This balance has allowed pilgrimage to flourish while preserving official caution, making Medjugorje an important case study in how a major religious institution manages extraordinary claims without requiring belief in them.[Vatican]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic. The 1981 visions and the rise of pilgrimage
The reported apparitions began on 24 June 1981, when six young people from the parish of Medjugorje said they had seen the Virgin Mary on a hillside near the village. According to their accounts, the figure identified herself as the “Queen of Peace” and encouraged prayer, fasting, repentance and reconciliation. Several of the visionaries later claimed that the apparitions continued regularly, with some reporting ongoing messages for decades.
The claims emerged in socialist Yugoslavia, where organised religion operated under political constraints but remained deeply important to many Croat Catholics in Herzegovina. News of the visions spread rapidly through local networks before reaching international Catholic media, devotional publishers and pilgrimage organisers. Long before any official Church judgement, Medjugorje had become a destination for believers seeking confession, Mass, prayer and spiritual renewal rather than simply curiosity about miraculous events.
Unlike many alleged apparition sites that attract attention for a few months before fading, Medjugorje developed into a permanent pilgrimage centre. Annual youth festivals, organised retreats and international prayer groups helped create a global community that viewed the village as a place of conversion rather than merely an unexplained phenomenon. This broad devotional culture proved more durable than debates about whether every reported apparition had actually occurred.[Vatican]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic. Why the Church refused a simple yes or no
One of the most misunderstood aspects of Medjugorje is that the Catholic Church has never treated the question as simply whether the Virgin Mary appeared or did not appear.
Instead, Church authorities gradually separated several different issues:
- whether any apparitions were genuinely supernatural;
- whether the reported messages were consistent with Catholic teaching;
- whether genuine spiritual benefits were occurring among pilgrims;
- whether public devotion should be encouraged or restricted.
This distinction reflects long-standing Catholic practice in evaluating alleged private revelations. Even approved Marian apparitions are not doctrines that Catholics must believe. Claims must be examined for theological consistency, credibility, pastoral consequences and the possibility of deception or psychological misunderstanding.
Medjugorje presented particular difficulties because the reported apparitions continued for decades rather than ending after a short series of events. Ongoing messages made definitive judgement much harder. A declaration that the apparitions were unquestionably supernatural would imply confidence not only in past reports but also potentially in future claims that had not yet occurred. This unusual situation encouraged prolonged caution rather than rapid approval or rejection.[Vatican]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic. What the Vatican permits and what it does not affirm
The Vatican’s present position is deliberately nuanced. In 2019 it authorised official pilgrimages organised by dioceses and parishes, recognising that large numbers of Catholics were already visiting Medjugorje for legitimate devotional purposes. This authorisation explicitly avoided recognising the authenticity of the apparitions themselves.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCatholic Church response to the Medjugorje apparitionsCatholic Church response to the Medjugorje apparitions
A more significant development came in September 2024 when the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued the document The Queen of Peace. Rather than declaring the visions supernatural, it granted a nihil obstat—literally “nothing stands in the way”—for devotion connected with Medjugorje. Under the Vatican’s revised 2024 procedures for evaluating alleged supernatural phenomena, this judgement recognises that pilgrims may benefit spiritually from the experience while stopping short of affirming the reported apparitions as miraculous.[Vatican]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic. It is experienced especially in communal events, such as pilgrimages and prayer…
The document makes several important points:
- Catholics may participate in pilgrimages and devotional practices associated with Medjugorje.
- Believers are not required to accept that the apparitions are supernatural.
- Positive spiritual fruits such as conversion, confession, prayer and reconciliation are recognised.
- Individual messages attributed to the visionaries should not automatically be treated as divine revelation.
- Church authorities retain the right to evaluate future messages and correct problematic interpretations.
The Vatican also stressed that recognising spiritual benefits does not amount to endorsing every statement made by the alleged visionaries or judging their personal lives. The focus is pastoral rather than evidential: whether the place helps people live Christian lives, not whether every reported supernatural event has been historically verified.[Vatican]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic. Testimony, healing claims and the pilgrimage economy
Many pilgrims describe experiences that they regard as miraculous. Some report physical healing, although medically verified cases remain uncommon and carefully scrutinised. Far more common are testimonies of personal conversion, recovery from addiction, renewed family relationships, return to regular religious practice or a deeper prayer life.
From the Church’s perspective, these spiritual experiences carry more weight than dramatic miracle stories. The 2024 Vatican note repeatedly highlights confession, participation in the sacraments, charitable commitment and reconciliation as the strongest evidence that something pastorally valuable is taking place.[Vatican]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic. At the same time, Medjugorje has transformed the local economy. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, religious shops, tour companies and pilgrimage agencies now serve visitors from across the world. This commercial success has inevitably generated criticism alongside enthusiasm. Sceptics argue that financial interests may reinforce belief or encourage sensational claims, while supporters point out that pilgrimage centres throughout Christian history have also supported substantial local economies.
The Vatican’s cautious approach reflects awareness of these competing pressures. Its recent norms for alleged supernatural phenomena emphasise the need to guard against fraud, commercial exploitation and manipulation while recognising authentic pastoral benefits where they exist.[Vatican]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic. Why Medjugorje matters beyond the question of miracles
Medjugorje illustrates that collective religious movements do not necessarily depend on official confirmation. Millions of pilgrims have travelled there not because the Church declared the apparitions authentic, but because they or people they trust experienced the site as spiritually meaningful.
For scholars of religion, Medjugorje demonstrates how testimony, pilgrimage networks, devotional publishing and later digital communication can sustain belief over many decades even while official institutions continue their investigation. It is neither simply an example of mass credulity nor merely an institutional success story. Rather, it shows how personal experience, communal identity and ecclesiastical authority can coexist without complete agreement.
Within Bosnia and Herzegovina, Medjugorje has become one of the country’s most internationally recognised religious locations. Its importance lies not only in disputed claims about supernatural visions but also in the remarkable way an unverified apparition developed into a global centre of Catholic pilgrimage while remaining within carefully defined limits of official belief.[vatican.va]vatican.varc ddf doc 20240919 nota esperienza medjugorje enThe spirituality of Medjugorje is not individualistic.
