Introduction
In 2019, Bangladesh experienced one of its deadliest modern rumour panics when a false claim that the under-construction Padma Bridge required human sacrifices evolved into widespread fears that children were being kidnapped for ritual killing. The rumour spread rapidly through Facebook, YouTube, messaging apps and word of mouth, convincing many people that strangers were abducting children to obtain heads or blood for the bridge’s foundations. There was no evidence whatsoever for these claims. Nevertheless, panic triggered a series of vigilante attacks in which innocent people were beaten, and several were killed after being falsely accused of child abduction. The episode has become one of Bangladesh’s clearest examples of how old folklore, modern social media and public distrust can combine to produce deadly mob violence.[afp.com]factcheck.afp.comAFP Fact CheckBangladesh says human sacrifice claim about Padma Bridge, which triggered lynchings, is 'baseless rumour' | Fact CheckJuly…
Why did the human-sacrifice legend emerge?
The rumour did not appear from nowhere. Stories that large bridges or major public works require human sacrifice have circulated in South Asia and many other parts of the world for generations. These legends often claim that a building cannot stand securely unless human blood or a buried victim is offered during construction. Historians and folklorists regard them as recurring construction myths rather than records of real engineering practice.
As construction of the Padma Bridge became a symbol of national ambition, this older folklore attached itself to the project. During mid-2019, fabricated social media posts claimed that engineers needed children’s heads or blood to complete the bridge. Manipulated photographs, invented eyewitness stories and fabricated warnings spread widely online, making the rumour appear authentic to many readers. Bangladesh’s government and the Padma Bridge authorities repeatedly stated that the claims were entirely false and warned that spreading them was a criminal offence.[AFP Fact Check]factcheck.afp.comAFP Fact CheckBangladesh says human sacrifice claim about Padma Bridge, which triggered lynchings, is 'baseless rumour' | Fact CheckJuly…
How fear of child kidnapping spread
The rumour quickly changed from a supernatural story into a practical warning that ordinary people believed could affect their own families.
Instead of merely claiming that sacrifices had occurred, many posts insisted that organised gangs were travelling through towns and villages to seize children. Parents were urged to watch schools, avoid strangers and circulate warnings to friends and relatives. As often happens during rumour panics, repeated sharing created an impression that the threat had been independently confirmed many times.
Several factors helped the panic spread:
- Facebook and messaging apps allowed identical stories to circulate nationwide within hours.
- Graphic edited images gave fabricated claims visual credibility.
- Genuine concern for children’s safety encouraged people to share warnings “just in case”.
- Existing distrust of institutions led some people to rely more on neighbourhood rumours than official statements.
- In many communities, strangers behaving unusually were immediately viewed with suspicion.
Researchers studying misinformation in Bangladesh have identified the Padma Bridge rumour as a major example of how false information circulated faster than effective fact-checking, particularly where local verification mechanisms were weak.[afp.com]factcheck.afp.comAFP Fact CheckBangladesh says human sacrifice claim about Padma Bridge, which triggered lynchings, is 'baseless rumour' | Fact CheckJuly…
The victims and the wave of mob violence
The consequences were devastating.
During July 2019, numerous innocent people were attacked after being accused of attempting to kidnap children. Police later concluded that none of those killed had actually been child abductors. Victims included both men and women, many of whom had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. More than thirty other people were assaulted in connection with the rumours.[afp.com]factcheck.afp.comAFP Fact CheckBangladesh says human sacrifice claim about Padma Bridge, which triggered lynchings, is 'baseless rumour' | Fact CheckJuly…
One of the best-known cases occurred in Dhaka’s Badda neighbourhood. A woman visiting a school to ask about admissions became the target of suspicion. Within minutes, a crowd accused her of being a child kidnapper and beat her to death despite the absence of any evidence. Videos of the attack circulated online, shocking many Bangladeshis and illustrating how rapidly collective fear could overwhelm reason and due process.[The Daily Star]online.thedailystar.netThe Daily Star Rumours and mob killings: What are the underlying causes? The Daily StarRumours and mob killings: What are the underlying causes?July 26, 2019…
The attacks shared several common features:
- Victims were usually strangers unfamiliar to the local community.
- Accusations spread verbally through crowds rather than through verified evidence.
- Violence escalated extremely quickly before police could intervene.
- Crowd members often acted because others appeared convinced of the accusation.
These characteristics resemble many historical rumour-driven lynchings around the world, where collective belief replaces individual judgement.
How the authorities responded
As the violence intensified, the Bangladeshi authorities mounted a nationwide response.
Police publicly declared that no children were being abducted for the Padma Bridge and urged citizens never to attack suspected offenders. Officers used loudspeakers in some districts to reassure residents and encourage people to report suspicious behaviour to police rather than taking the law into their own hands. Security agencies also arrested individuals accused of deliberately spreading the false claims online.[tbsnews.net]tbsnews.netThe Business Standard Police warn against rumour over Padma bridgeThe Business Standard Police warn against rumour over Padma bridge
According to police statements at the time:
- multiple people were arrested for creating or sharing the false rumours;
- dozens of Facebook pages, YouTube channels and websites promoting the conspiracy were removed following official requests; and
- investigations into the lynchings found no evidence that any of the victims had been involved in child abduction.[AFP Fact Check]factcheck.afp.comAFP Fact CheckBangladesh says human sacrifice claim about Padma Bridge, which triggered lynchings, is 'baseless rumour' | Fact CheckJuly…
The government’s response combined criminal investigations with public information campaigns aimed at reducing panic before further attacks occurred.
Why did so many people believe it?
The Padma Bridge panic cannot be explained by social media alone.
The rumour succeeded because it combined several powerful influences:
An older folk belief. Construction-sacrifice legends already existed in popular culture, making the claim sound familiar rather than entirely new.
Fear for children. Threats involving children tend to spread rapidly because parents are naturally inclined to share warnings even without verification.
Rapid digital circulation. Social media dramatically accelerated what had once been local oral rumours, allowing identical stories to reach millions almost simultaneously.
Crowd psychology. Once a few people publicly accused someone of kidnapping, others often accepted the accusation without demanding evidence. Visible certainty within a crowd can create a powerful pressure to conform.
Some sociologists have also suggested that the panic reflected wider problems of institutional trust. Where confidence in official information is weak, rumours can become alternative sources of authority, particularly during periods of uncertainty.[thedailystar.net]online.thedailystar.netThe Daily Star Rumours and mob killings: What are the underlying causes? The Daily StarRumours and mob killings: What are the underlying causes?July 26, 2019…
Why the episode remains important
The Padma Bridge rumour has become a landmark case in discussions of misinformation and collective fear in Bangladesh.
It demonstrates that modern digital technologies do not replace traditional folklore; instead, they can amplify it. An old construction legend that might once have remained a local story was transformed into a nationwide panic through online networks, resulting in real-world violence.
The episode is also frequently cited by researchers studying misinformation, digital literacy and crowd behaviour because it illustrates how false narratives can move from screens into physical action within days. Rather than representing mass psychogenic illness, the events are better understood as a rumour-driven moral panic that produced vigilante justice against innocent people.[uchicago.edu]journals.uchicago.eduChicago JournalsMobs and Megaprojects Infrastructure as Populism in Bangladesh: Infrastructure as Populism in Bangladesh: Current Anthrop…
For Bangladesh’s recent social history, the Padma Bridge killings stand as a stark reminder that rumours can be as dangerous as physical threats when they exploit longstanding cultural beliefs, spread through trusted social networks and persuade frightened crowds to abandon evidence in favour of suspicion.
